WHIRL Team Profile: HOT-Q

This team is designing a tool will allow teachers and students to author quiz-like questions that will allow them to test their understanding of scientific concepts. In contrast to previously developed "flashcard" tools for handheld computers, this team's tool will scaffold question design to support the development of higher-order questions as reflected in the Quellmalz Taxonomy (and similar frameworks for assessing question quality). The tool will not only keep track of student progress but will also track the kinds and quality of student- and teacher-authored questions. The key need teachers see this tool addressing is encouraging student self-review and self-checking of conceptual understanding.
